Starting Point

At CHEMPARK Leverkusen, CURRENTA operates a complex utility infrastructure comprising several hundred buildings and an energy-intensive production environment. Until now, consumption data for electricity, gas, and water has been recorded manually at meter locations that are difficult to access. A time-consuming process that is error-prone and does not provide real-time data.

Challenged problems

  • Significant manual effort and poor data quality
    Meter readings were taken manually on a monthly basis—in an industrial setting with exposed metering points spread out over large areas.
  • Lack of real-time data and a centralized overview
    Energy consumption data could neither be analyzed across different media nor used in a timely manner for operations, billing, reporting, or energy management.
  • No transparency for landlords and tenants
    Neither electricity, water, nor gas consumption could be accurately and transparently tracked. This poses a problem for cost control and ESG reporting.

Solution

Smart meters connected via LoRaWAN – for greater efficiency, data availability, and CO₂ savings at CHEMPARK.

  • Retrofitting existing meters with Conneqtive IoT sensors
    Existing analog meters were converted to digital—using clip-on sensors with wireless transmission, without any changes to the infrastructure.
  • Connectivity via LoRaWAN infrastructure
    Ten LoRaWAN gateways ensure stable wireless connections—over distances of several kilometers and without the need for new cabling.
  • Centralized visualization on a data platform
    All measured values are transmitted in real time to a cloud platform, where they are made available for operational use, reporting, and analysis.
